What is the silver bullet in marketing to schools? Spoiler alert: there isn’t one.
I’m often asked, “How do we get through to busy schools and really reach our key stakeholders?” which is followed by a hopeful pause and a look that says ‘go on then, tell us your secret.’ When asked this, it seems people think I’ve discovered a brilliant magic trick or a one-size-fits-all solution over the last decade. Marketing can be complex, and in a sector as unique as education, it’s tempting to hope for a silver bullet. But, the reality is, there just isn’t one.
Marketing to schools has become harder than ever
The biggest challenge when marketing to schools is budgets. Continued real-term budget cuts are hitting schools from all sides. With only part-funded teacher raises, increased National Insurance contributions, higher pension costs and overall increased running costs – school funding simply isn’t keeping pace with inflation. Schools are being asked to do even more, with even less.
It’s a tough landscape, but that doesn’t mean it’s hopeless
Schools still need support. They still need products and services to help them function and to ensure their pupils have excellent learning experiences. Our opportunities haven’t disappeared – they’ve just become harder to win. Which means we, as marketers, need to keep focussing on our tried and tested approaches, ensuring we cut through all the noise and present schools with a compelling offer that they will truly benefit from.
What does work?
I often find myself repeating the same message when speaking to colleagues and clients – because it all comes back to the basics. Good, honest, strategic marketing.
- A great product or service is where it all begins.
No amount of marketing can rescue a poor offer. If your solution isn’t truly valuable or needed by schools, you’re already on the back foot. Market fit is everything. - Understand your audience inside out.
Who in the school ecosystem benefits most from your offer? Is it the Headteacher? The Business Manager? The SENCO? Tailor your messaging to resonate with them – their challenges, their goals, and their language. - Get your messaging and channel strategy right.
It’s not just what you say, but how and where you say it. Your messaging should be clear, compelling and consistent – and delivered across the channels that matter most. And remember: one email or one Facebook ad won’t cut it. You need to show up in multiple places, multiple times.
Building multi-channel campaigns
Yes, we still get asked to “just run an email campaign” or “do a bit of Facebook advertising.” And while those tactics can work in the short term, they won’t deliver the most effective results in isolation, over time.
Multi-channel campaigns built on solid foundations, with smart audience targeting and well-timed delivery are what really move schools along the marketing funnel.
A great example of this is our work with Bikeability. By refining our messaging, carefully selecting the right channels, and getting the timing right, we saw meaningful engagement and real results. Read more about our Bikeability campaign.
In the end it’s actually quite simple
So no silver bullet – just smart, strategic marketing, done properly. And that’s exactly what we love helping organisations with.
