Congratulations School Marketers, you’ve made it to half term! Personally, I can’t believe how quickly the last six weeks have gone. It only seems like yesterday that I was eating too much turkey and gorging on mince pies.
I know what a busy bunch you are and I doubt that you’ll have too much time to kick back over the next week or so, but if you do have a bit of a break from things, then I’m hoping that you may have time to indulge in a bit of ‘you time’. So, here’s five things to check out if you’re lucky enough to escape the office, even just for a few hours.
#1 Learn a new skill
Udemy offers a wealth of knowledge and carries over 100,000 online video courses and have specific ‘Design’ and ‘Marketing’ categories. Here you can learn anything from mastering Google Analytics to Photoshop for Beginners. All courses are written by experts and you can go at your own pace. Even better, you can grab a course for around £15 – a complete bargain!
#2 Join a Schools Marketing Facebook Group
Okay, so we’re going to blow our own trumpet here and ask you to check out ‘School Marketing Matters’ closed Facebook Group. We’ve set this group up just for you, as we noticed that some of the more established groups, while brilliant, have a US focus. This one is more geared to the UK market and we’re already talking about merits of TikTok and whether external research consultants are worth the investment. So, join us and get involved in the conversation by searching for ‘School Marketing Matters’ on Facebook.
#3 Try Bullet Journaling
An analogue system created by Ryder Carroll, a Designer based in New York, he promises that bullet journaling can offer you a more productive and meaningful life. According to Good Housekeeping, bullet journaling is ‘Equal parts day planner, diary, and written meditation, bullet journaling turns the chaos of coordinating your life into a streamlined system that helps you be more productive and reach your personal and professional goals’. Here’s a great video from Ryder himself that explains more. We’ve also got a blog piece on it here.
#4 Read ‘This is Marketing’ by Seth Godin
We’re big fans of Seth Godin. He writes the most popular marketing blog in the world and speaks to audiences around the globe. Seth offers the core of his marketing wisdom in one compact, accessible, timeless package. If you are looking for a marketing methodology where you can implement it and start cranking the handle, this isn’t it. As one reviewer days: ‘Seth brings up the things we all think we know and question them. And he raises the points we should consider when creating, selling and engaging’. You can buy it here.
#5 Get into podcasts
Podcasts have surged in popularity in recent years and there are now thousands to choose from. It’s a great way to while away your morning commute and you’ll also learn something in the process! We like ‘How to Fail’ with Elizabeth Day, which explores why you can only succeed if you fail and features guests such as Lily Allen and Alistair Campbell. Another good listen is Ctrl Alt Delete with Emma Brennan, where she chats to her guests about their relationships with the Internet. It’s has had nearly 6 million downloads, with guests including the philosopher Alain de Botton, activist Rachel Cargle and cleaning guru Mrs Hinch.
There you have it, five things to put a spring back in your step over half term and not a social media calendar or press release in sight! So, whether you like to read, listen or do, we hope you find some inspiration here.
