There are so many stories to be told about your school and Instagram is a great place to tell them. But before you get snap happy, you need to think about how ensure your school’s Instagram efforts are effective, not just aesthetically pleasing.

So, what do you need to do?

Follow our 7-step plan, and you’ll be onto a winner.

Step #1 – Create a plan

Having a plan in place that tells you what to post and when will save you valuable time in the future. Plus, there’s no point just posting a random photo just because it’s pretty, there needs to be a reason behind it.

Have a look at Sprout Social’s best posting times here, there are even ones specific to education.

TIP: Use scheduling tools such as Facebook’s Creator Studio or Hootsuite.

Step #2 – A splash of creativity

If you want to be noticed on Instagram, you need stunning photos, and that means being creative with your snaps.

Spark some inspiration by having a look at these school’s Instagram accounts, they’re ranked in the top 3 with Edurank and you could certainly learn a thing or two from them.

TIP: Use your school’s USPs to your advantage. If you have particularly impressive sports facilities, promote them. If your school has a state-of-the-art IT hub, take some creative shots of it.

Step #3 – Keep it personal

Now you’re feeling inspired, don’t forget to keep your content real and add a touch of personality. Don’t post the same caption to every post, ask for quotes from staff, students and parents and keep things fresh. That is, unless you’re taking part in #throwbackthursday.

And, don’t forget to make sure your posts are on brand.

Step #4 – Use hashtags

Hashtags allow your posts to be seen by a wider audience, people that aren’t already following you.

I’d recommend creating a list of hashtags that are relevant to your school.

TIP: Create a bespoke hashtag for your school, we use #ambleglow on all of our posts.

Step #5 – Make sure you’re engaging with your audience

Social media was created so we could engage with others. So, there’s no point having an Instagram account, or any other social media account for that matter, if you’re not interacting with your followers.

Start a conversation by creating captions that pose questions to your followers and make sure you’re replying to all messages and comments.

It’s also a good idea to scroll down your feed every now and then to like and comment on a few posts, this will increase your engagement and help you out when it comes to Instagram’s dreaded algorithm.

Step #6 – Post regularly, but don’t go mad

To make sure you’re reaching your audience you need to make sure you’re posting regularly or at least consistently. Once a day or once every two days, just make sure it’s consistent. The plan you created will help with this.

On the other hand, if you’re posting too often it will negatively affect your engagement. So, don’t go crazy.

Step #7 – Measure your success

Make sure you’re measuring success and keeping track of it. If your SLT ask, you want to show them that what you’re doing is worthwhile and you’re not just taking photos for fun.

Implement our tips and you’ll reap the rewards in no time. But don’t forget, this isn’t an overnight solution, it will take time.
