Covid-19 and school recruitment, two things which, unlike cheese and crackers, do not go hand in hand. Schools have had to reshape their recruitment strategies to cater for the uninvited guest that is Coronavirus.

However, all is not lost, your recruitment processes can still go ahead. We’ve outlined a few must-haves to make this transition a little easier to manage!

#1 Video Interviews

Conducting an interview in person may not be possible under the current climate, but video interviews can be just as effective in school recruitment.

Video interviews are particularly useful if you plan to interview a high volume of candidates. It reduces the time it takes to interview, as opposed to setting aside weeks to conduct interviews in person with each candidate. They also provide a unique opportunity to see people in their home rather than an office, making the experience more personal.

Just make sure you have a plan B in case the technology lets you down.

#2 Assess classroom competency

Virtual recruitment makes it seem near impossible to gauge how the candidate works in the classroom. Many schools are asking candidates to deliver a live lesson remotely via the software being used at the school.

This will give you an accurate impression of the candidates’ ability to teach remotely as well as how they deal with any technical barriers they are faced with.

#3 Remote working policies

Offering flexible working during these difficult times makes candidates feel more comfortable and ‘in good hands’. Working from home some days and at school will allow candidates to feel safe and secure and can increase productivity.

#4 Host virtual job fairs

Virtual job fairs are much cheaper and more convenient as they don’t require any travel time or set up time. Hosting a virtual job fair is also a great way to interact with potential candidates. It allows candidates to visualise their potential place of work and gives you a chance to show off the school culture to prospective staff members.
